Spotlight on: Amathus Drinks

We’ve gone wild for wine

If you’ve popped into the pubs recently then you might have heard us talking about our refreshed wine list and some of the incredible new names on our menu. We’ve teamed up with our drinks supplier, Amathus, to break down some of our absolute favourites on the new menu.

We love Amathus Drinks because they truly love their product and go out of their way to find some of the best wine producers in the world. A family-run company with a 40-year history, they support smaller makers from Europe to Asia, and we’ve been lucky enough to taste some of the world’s best wine. We asked their Master of Wine, Jeremy Lithgow, to pull out some of his Clifton and Duke favourites, which just so happen to be ours as well!

Sparkling

We’ve gone British for our sparkling wine pick, the 2014 Fox and Fox Mosaic Brut, produced in Sussex by Gerard and Jonica Fox. It’s a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and aged for several years, giving it a beautifully complex profile with flavours of citrus, white peach and freshly baked bread. This truly is the Champagne of England and a delicious wine for any occasion!

White

Our white wine of choice from the new list is the Monte Pio Albarino from Spain. The Monte Pio winery in Rias Baixas use plots of old vines to produce their grapes, resulting in an unoaked dry white. You’ll get some hints of grapefruit on the nose and some peach on the palate – or, if you’re not that kind of wine drinker, simply sit back and enjoy this with some fish or a salad.

Red

Flipping ourselves to the other side of the world, our red wine of choice is the Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra in South Australia. Down under, winemaker Kate Goodman has brought back to life the Penley Estate and is now producing this incredible red with juicy blackcurrant and dark plum notes. It’s a great wine for all vino enthusiasts, red wine lover or not.

Dessert

We love a little dessert wine tipple after a meal, especially with the amazing range of desserts we have at both pubs at the moment – vegan and gluten free included! The pick of the moment is definitely the Mas Cristine Rivesaltes Ambré, produced by an Englishman who lives in Collioure near the Spanish border. Andy Cook makes this beautiful wine with a variety of grapes and ages it in barrels for five years before serving. The result is a wine that’s packed full of rich aromas – one to try with our salted caramel brownie, we think.
